Tiffinday is a social purpose business that delivers delicious, freshly made sustainable lunches in reusable stainless steel containers, called Tiffins, which are collected back the next day, leaving no litter behind for the garbage or recycling pipelines. Our meals and services are ideal for busy people who frequently eat at their desks, and for small business luncheons. We exclusively hire people who face barriers to employment, providing them with the means to earn a meaningful living by first hiring them to deliver the meals and then gradually training them in the business skills needed to become franchise owners. How is it social?
Tiffinday was founded upon three core values, environmental sustainability, social responsibility and profitability. We measure each of these values as an indication of our performance.
Environmental sustainability
We believe that a thriving community is one that lives in harmony with their eco-system. Living in an urban setting does not absolve us of our responsibility toward the environment.
- Commercial livestock production results in 18% of all global greenhouse gases known to cause climate change, exceeding the pollution caused by the global auto industry.
- It takes 7,000 litres of water to produce 100 grams of beef and 550 litres to produce flour for a loaf of bread
It is simply responsible to eat vegetarian meals more often and at Tiffinday, all our meals are vegan. We use soy, quinoa, lentils, beans, tofu and many other vegetarian protein sources that are gentler on the environment but just as filling and sometimes healthier, than meat. You will not be left feeling hungry. This is our way of helping people be good to the environment through their diet. Your body and our planet will thank you for it!
Our success is measured by:
- The number of meals sold as an indication of the number of non-vegetarian meals not sold.
- The number of meals delivered in tiffins as a measure of Styrofoam containers kept out of landfills and aluminum containers kept out of the recycling pipeline.
Furthermore, our ingredients are locally sourced when available seasonally. We do not yet know how to measure our success here, but we know that these practices contribute to the reduction of carbon and chemical footprints generated in the production and transportation of our ingredients.
Tiffinday supports www.meatlessmonday.ca, a growing international movement promoting vegetarianism just once a week as a powerful means of fighting climate change through direct action.
Social responsibility
Tiffinday exclusive hires people who face barriers to employment due to mental/physical disabilities, or because they have to work around the needs of young children in their care. Delivering approximately 35 meals per day to one location allows us to hire one full time person. Our goal is to hire five this year.
Our success is measured by the number of people who are able to earn a living either through employment or contract services with Tiffinday.
Profitability
A wise man once said that the accumulation of wealth was like collecting cow dung. Pile it up in one place and it will surely stink, but spread it around and beautiful things will grow.
At Tiffinday we are capitalists, motivated with acquiring and growing wealth - but not at any cost. We believe in being profitable because without it we limit our ability to influence change.
Our success is measured by the strength of our financial statements which allows us to improve upon and grow the social and environmental causes built into our day to day operations; money makes it possible for us to do more of it, better.
At every step of the way, we engage like minded people and organizations to make sure that everything from our food growers to our delivery system adds to the health of our broader community.
What is its business model?
As a startup, our business model is evolving as opportunities and like-minded partners become available.
Our goal is to partner with a licensed kitchen run by not-for-profit organizations to generate a dependable and sustainable flow of revenues, which in turn allows them to train and employ members of society that face barriers to being gainfully employed.
Gradually, we would like the NPO to become less reliant on sources of temporary funding such as government grants and turning it into a self funded social purpose enterprise.
Tiffinday Inc. is a client of MaRS Discovery District and under the guidance of their entrepreneurs-in-residence, we are growing and testing this model so that it can be taken to any urban centre in Canada as a social purpose franchise.
Its history
Founded on the premise that everyone has the right to delicious and nutritious meals, our commitment to environmental responsibility and enriching our community is evident in every facet of the business - from our reusable tiffins for meal delivery, to providing a living to those who face barriers to employment.
